Safety Management Systems
 |
An Integrated Approach to Safety Management |
Successful organisations are increasingly
realising the benefits of an integrated approach to
safety management.
The best organisations recognise the link between the
identification and control of risk, the general health
of their staff, and the success of their business. On
that basis, they build safety management systems that
are as integral to their organisation as any other business
process.
Health and safety management systems should
embrace all areas of your business; strategy, finance,
human resources, marketing, product design, manufacturing
and operating systems, information management and front-line
staff.
The Health and Safety Commission (HSC)
has issued guidance on company annual reports. Initially
aimed at the top 350 companies in the private sector,
it was extended to organisations with more than
250 employees in 2004. As a minimum,
the report suggests that the organisation’s annual
report should address key issues, including the effectiveness
of systems for controlling risks.
Organisations should begin to
plan this now – and we can help!
Effective safety management systems
generally have five key elements.
 |
Clear policies. |
 |
Effective organisation. |
 |
Systematic planning. |
 |
Performance measurement. |
 |
Audit and review processes. |

Let PHSC Develop, Monitor or Improve your Safety Management System |
We can help you to set up a management system from scratch to either meet your in-house objectives or to achieve accreditation to a recognised standard, such as:
Our consultants specialise in designing systems that are Practical, Helpful, Sensible and Concise.
We do not prepare complex and heavy manuals that are difficult to read and use. Simple flow charts, visual aids and check sheets are usually all that is needed to record and implement a management system. This way they can be understood by all employees and easily put into practice.
We can support you from developing the initial concept of your management system, right through to achieving accreditation with external auditors.
For those organisations who also have quality management systems such as ISO 9000, we can ensure that our design of your safety management system will be integrated rather than parallel to your existing format. This will avoid duplication, additional work and resources, and help to ensure that the system is put into practice smoothly.
