CIEH Principles and Practice of Risk Assessment
Introduction
Employers need to ensure that individuals carrying out risk assessments are competent to do so. A necessary precursor is that they have adequate knowledge and understanding of the principles of, and procedures for, carrying out an assessment.
This course is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, and successful completion helps to demonstrate that the assessors have reached a recognised standard of competence.
Suitable for:
Anyone who has a responsibility to conduct a risk assessment, or has an involvement in the risk assessment processes.
Course objectives
By the end of the training delegates will be able to:
- Identify the legal requirements for risk assessment.
- Understand the key issues and benefits of assessment.
- Differentiate between hazard and risk.
- Understand the importance of identifying people who may be affected by workplace hazards, and those who could be more vulnerable.
- Know how to quantify risk.
- Recommend suitable controls to eliminate/control risks, using the hierarchy of risk management strategies.
- Record assessments in a coherent format.
- Know how to monitor and review the assessments

One day.
Exam Format
Workplace project which requires the candidate to complete a risk assessment of a chosen area / process, and document it in report format.

- Health and safety law pertaining to risk assessment.
- Key definitions (hazard, risk, control measure).
- Benefits and consequences of risk assessment.
- Identifying hazards and people exposed to them.
- Quantifying risk.
- Measures to eliminate / control risk (using the hierarchy of controls). Recording assessments.
- Identify training needs associated with the risks being assessed.
- Monitoring and reviewing assessments.
