First-Aid at Work (HSE)
Introduction
A full Health and Safety Executive (HSE) approved First-Aid at Work course, in accordance with the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981.
Once qualified, holders of this First-Aid at Work certificate can be appointed as First-Aiders in the workplace. This course can be adapted to suit a particular audience, for example, clerical or engineering staff. The First-Aid at Work course is run over three days and includes both theory and practical sessions. By arrangement the course can be run on non-consecutive days, for example - one day a week over three weeks.

All persons wishing to become qualified first-aiders.
Course objectives
To be able to demonstrate their knowledge and skills of the subject areas included in the training by undertaking theory assessments and a final examination on the practical aspects of first-aid.
Duration
3 days
Exam Format
On the afternoon of the third day of training, a practical and an oral examination takes place. Each examination takes approximately 10 minutes.
100% attendance is required in order to be eligible for the examination.

- Treatment of non-breathing casualty
- Chain of survival in resuscitation
- Cardiopulmonary resuscitation
- Circulation problems and shock
- Contents of first aid boxes and their application
DAY TWO
- Causes of unconsciousness
- Head injuries and management of eye injuries
- Managing strokes
- Treatment of fainting
- Management of epilepsy and diabetes
- Treatment of slight bleeding
- Hygiene when dealing with wounds
- Bleeding from special areas (internal and external)
- Recognition and treatment of heart conditions
DAY THREE
- Management of burns and scalds
- Treatment of poisons
- Causes and recognition of fractures
- Treatment of upper limb fractures
- Special fractures
- Treatment of lower limb fractures
- Principles of dealing with joint and muscle injuries
- Revision
- Assessment and examination
