A local authority was having concerns regarding their compliance with health and safety and environmental management compliance, so they asked PHSC for assistance. We conducted a Due Diligence Review on their behalf, using a sample representation of their Civil Amenity & Waste Transfer sites.. This approached enabled us to obtain relevant data across a range of locations to give realistic feedback, without the expense of visiting every location.

 The review looked specifically at legal and industry standards in terms of  health and safety management and environmental compliance, and in particular we reviewed the relationship between the local authority and the six waste management contractors.

We produced our summary report and action plan to help the Council to prioritise, and we presented our findings in person so we could show evidence to substantiate our findings.

This open dialogue enabled the local authority to better understand how to achieve improvements by streamlining and integrating their systems;  we were invited back when our recommendations had been addressed to review these, and comment on progress.

One of our clients in the food industry was experiencing spiralling costs for its waste. We delivered a series of CIEH accredited courses to managers on environmental management, and focussed specifically on its waste processes. We now also can deliver IOSH accredited environmental training

We worked with our client to identify the different waste streams, and then we worked with a local specialist to devise innovative ways for minimising their materials, and reusing or selling their waste. For example, we advised that fruit being delivered to the factory in cardboard boxes be changed to plastic boxes which could be returned to the supplier and re-used. This alone saved several thousand pounds over the year in reduced fees for waste cardboard.

We worked with our client to train staff to use the 20 waste streams we identified and appointed environment team leaders to monitor correct use. The end result was that our client achieved Waste Neutral costing.
